Weekend Project: Making a Drawbot September 15, 2006
I am a beginning robot enthusiast. I got hooked looking at the article in Make: 07 about the scribbler. Robotics is a bigger project than a weekend. If you are looking for something simple, you could mess about with a kit or reverse engineer this.

Weekend Projects - Making A Drawbot September 15, 2006
When I saw the scribbler robot article in Make: 07, I had to make one. At first I thought it would be easy to get some steppers and boss them around with some software. Well that's what needed to be done, but it wasn't easy. Luckily I got a lot of the hardware issues out of the way by finding a medical robot that organized vials of blood off ebay to convert into my robot.

Maker: Ernie Fosselius September 11, 2006
A few months ago, I got a chance to go visit Ernie Fosselius' workshop with some of my peers at Make: and it was great to hang out with Ernie as he shared his work with us. Ernie makes automatons, puppets, and human powered machines that are clever and fun. Besides showing his work, there are a lot of gems of wisdom in this video for makers.

Weekend Projects - Batometer September 8, 2006
In 2000, I spent a summer living in the woods doing restoration work. I lived in a tent and every night, the bats would come out and I oftened wondered what it would sound like to be a bat and to be able to hear all of the bat-traffic aound my tent. At that time, I had a lot of gadgets and I still daydream of combining them all into one. Who doesn't need a combination cellphone, camera, elecric shaver, gps logger, calendar with the added feature of bat detection? For now, I'm quite happy with the batometer, it makes an uber-geek fashion statement and allows me to listen to the ultrasonic frequencies that bats make when they use echolocation to fly in the dark.

Weekend Projects - Make A Persistence of Vision Gadget August 18, 2006
In this video Jake McKenzie, Matt Dalton, and Bre Pettis show how to put together a persistence of vision gadget that you can put on your bicycle. Persistence of vision is a perceptual process where your brain holds an image in it's head for a moment. This process is what lets us think that movies have people moving in them instead of seeing all 24 frames a second as individual pictures. This projects programs LEDs to flash and appear to make words in the air. Watch the video to learn more and make sure to check out the instructions!
