Design tubular structures with Kee Klamp using Sketchup

229758449 Bcb50Ad73E O
Chris writes - "We have released a new section of our web site dedicated to designing tubular structures with SketchUp. We invite people to construct with the components we have on the site and those they make themselves and contribute to the project and component library. The initial fittings in the library were created using the CAD drawings for Kee Klamp fittings, but you could easily use them as substitutes for designing PVC structures in SketchUp." - Link.

This is pretty smart - any company that makes "things" you can build with should really consider doing "libraries" for SketchUp - imagine being able to construct anything in 3D and (eventually) "checking out" and getting all the stuff shipped or purchased waiting for you. I think a parts API of some sort from Amazon, DigiKey, Mouser, etc etc and Sketchup could really be interesting - any way, you can build stuff now with using the library from Simplified Building.

USB Snooping in linux

Dsc07703
Rad, Quiet Earth has a good how-to on listening in to what's going on over USB, great for reverse engineering weird USB doo-dads... - "This is intended to be a howto to debug usb transactions under linux, or simply to reverse engineer propietary usb stuff. If you need to reverse engineer a windows only usb driver, you can do it easily running vmware under linux. We can snoop the usb traffic from windows using usbmon which is part of the linux kernel since version 2.6.11 (I think). Previous to that you had to use patches." - Link.

Homeade laptop water cooler

Many of the newer-ish laptops get hot, really hot - here's one solution, an external water-cooler... Bard writes - "Introducing the Waldic (water & air laptop direct input cooler). This device is a dual mode home made laptop cooler. It was made for the purpose of watching movies without being disturbed by the annoying fan. The following pics are mostly self explanatory." HOW TO - Scan the 'waves with your TV card

Img413 1198
AMXL shows you how to use a SAA7134 based TV card and Debian to tune in to all sorts of waves you can't normally get with your TV... Looks like it will work with many of the TV cards out there too... - "If you have a TV capture card in your computer, you probably already have all the hardware you need to listen in on much more than just TV and radio (only software changes are needed). The hardware will also allow you to hear emergency services, taxi and freight radios, UHF citizen band radio, aircraft transmissions, and more.

In this article, I show you how you can make your Linux distribution (I used Debian Sarge, but other distros should work too, as long as you have a 2.6.x Linux kernel) and SAA7134 based TV card tune into those frequencies you can't get at with a normal radio or TV." [via] - Link.

Mac OS X Panther on a 25MHz Centris 650

001Big
Danamania is attempting to run Mac OS X on an old 25mhz Mac, should only take one week to boot up, nice - "The victi-WMac used for this little project is a Centris 650, with 68MB RAM, a 25MHz 68040 and 4GB drive - JUST big enough to fit my existing PearPC drive image. I admit to cheating when it comes to the OSX install, I plan on using the same Panther drive image as I'd used on my Athlon. I'm only being a little masochistic here, not going completely daft and trying to sit through a 68k OSX install... The waiting while Debian crawls through its own hours-long install is bad enough... According to the developers, PearPC using generic emulation (the only option on a non-x86) runs "about 500 times slower" than the host CPU. Ouch. That makes for a 0.05MHz G3, at the best. That's around 4000 times slower than the Athlon boots, and since that takes roughly 2 and a half minutes - I'm looking at at least 6.99 days. One week to boot!" [via] - Link.

Powerbook sleeve made from an Ikea towel

260912549 B15A27565E
A towel, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to- hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

And... even more useful now, as a laptop sleeve... - Link.

Casey is one of my favorite developers, he's always doing amazing projects - like this one, an instant message bot you can talk to which will remotely record TV (Media Center PC), it can also work via voice, so imagine using your mobile device and speaking "record HOW ITS MADE ON THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL" and when you get home, it's waiting for you, neat.
