Steam bicycles

There is something in the air, and it's steam... A few Makers sent in some steam powered bicycles, here's a round up... know of others? Post in the comments.

The Roper Steam motorcycle "Bob Jorgensen of Memphis took "Motocycles 1899" and immediately fabricated the engine that Sylvester H Roper used on his steam motorcycle. The original boiler which Bob has yet to build provided 160 to 225 psi of steam. Roper died while racing his motorcycle at the age of 73!"- Link.

The Hudspith Steam Bicycle, by Geoff Hudspith The engine is a horizontai single-cylinder, double-acting one of my own design. The bore is 1 3/8" and the stroke is 1 1/4", giving about 1/4hp, depending on the pressure of the steam. I ran and exhibited the engine and boiler for several years as a stationary unit driving a 12V dynamo. During this period I made several improvements to the engine, eg: making a boiler feed pump driven by an eccentric on the crankshaft, and controlled by a by-pass valve to the right of the engine. - Link.

Michaux-Perreaux steam bicycle - This is normally considered to be the first motorcycle. Built in France, 1868-1869. The engine is mounted at 45 degrees on the main frame member; behind it is the boiler, with what appear to be fuel and water tanks. Note that this is a velocipede, not a Safety Bicycle, and the pedals are mounted directly on the front wheel. - Link.

1896 Geneva steam bicycle "This authentically restored bicycle, manufactured by the Geneva Bicycle and Steam Carriage Co. in Geneva Ohio, is fitted with a steam engine built on the design of Lucius Copeland, who built his first steam vehicle based on a Star high wheeled bicycle in 1886. It will travel at 12 miles per hour, although maintaining a head of steam at that speed is difficult." - Link.

HOW TO - Orange chopper bicycle

Atomic Zombie has a great step by step on making your own chopper bike, KoolKat writes - "Kids' bikes with 20-inch wheels are abundant at the dump and yard sales, especially the cheap steel frame units. These bikes not only take a beating, but they are outgrown in a year or two, so you will probably find a lot of them at your favorite scrap yard or city dump. These frames are easy to chop, and 20-inch bikes make great choppers, but unless you are only 4 1/2 feet tall, there won't be much leg room on one of these bikes.
The problem of size is compounded even more if the head tube angle is taken back to add more rake, as this pushes the handlebars even closer to the seat. At this point, your only option is to move the seat higher or farther back, creating either a goofy looking chop, or a flying death trap that pulls uncontrollable wheelies on so much as a sneeze.
To get a little more leg room on a chopper made from kid's 20-inch frame, two frames will be joined together in order to move the bottom bracket further up. The head tube will also be pushed forward, allowing for a nice long set of forks to be installed without creating a super tall wheelie machine." - Link.

Furniture made from bikes

Spluch writes in with some really inspiring furniture, made from bicycle parts - "Bike Furniture Design manufactures furniture from recycled bicycles parts as well as components from other transportation industries. Since the original bike, Bike Furniture Designs have grown to include a wide-ranging collection of high-quality tables, bar stools, loveseats, and more chairs. What an interesting way of recycling scrap." - Link.

DIY Sport-utility bike

DL writes - "Bettie is a Bike Hugger project to build a sport-utility bike with a Karate Monkey 29-incher frame, Stokemonkey, and an Xtracycle. Bettie has an enormous carrying capacity, it's heavy duty -- 2 adults or an adult and 2 kids at a time -- and is fun (really, really fun)." - Link.

They look like vintage planes but they are actually just good o' bikes that ride on the street. According to Billy, the creator, it's street legal in all 50 states. Billy may be "flying" down your street one day soon. Link.

HOW TO - Paint a bike frame

Bike restore master (and MAKE Flickr photo pool member) xddorox is restoring a vintage CCM bike, here's the frame painting how-to - "Ok, I decided to follow my own advice for once. I was about to start my first bicycle repaint job in many years and on top of it, I was going to try a new primer. So i decided to start with the fork, which I usually keep for last. My goal was to prime the fork, post about it and do the frame later." [via] - Link.

Homemade wooden coaster bike

The CrumleyFamily posted some build photos of their homemade wooden coaster bike in the MAKE Flickr photo pool they made (picture here, start and finish) - "About a year ago, Alli's Mom pointed out a wooden coaster bike that would be a cool toy for Fuller someday. I had seen pictures of them before and had always thought they were kinda cool. Also, they supposedly help kids learn to ride bicycles without training wheels. But, instead of letting Alli's Mom buy him one, I proposed that I would make one and they could pay for the materials..." [via] - Link.

Patchwork Bike Club's custom bicycles

Rick writes - "Patchwork Central in Evansville, Indiana, runs after-school art programs for inner-city kids. Over the three years that I ran the Bike Club there, the kids (10 years old & up) & I created a number of amazing and unusual custom bikes. Whatever the kids dreamed up, we built... staying within the laws of physics, of course. We'd begin our custom bike weeks by drawing out any and all ideas for a bike, including flying bikes and so forth. After looking at all our drawings, we'd refine our ideas based on what was possible given our stock pile of bike parts and the amount of time we had. Then we'd get cutting & welding, and after a week, we'd have another cool custom bike. We kept these vehicles in our "stable" so that all the kids in the club had the opportunity to ride the custom bike of their choice on our weekly bike rides. Man, those rides were awesome; each one was like a parade!" - Link.
