HOW TO - Make the ultimate 18v Bike Light!

Douglas.mauro writes -
"Mountain Biking at night (or early morning) is a true blast.. Using headlamps has been the only real choice short of spending some coin on a true bike light (some of these puppies cost >$500!!).
While the lack of light never stopped us from riding, the glory of having a MEAN bike light was calling me out." - Link.

Homemade beach bike

Peter writes -
"Your readers might want to check out this bizarre home-made bicycle that looks like it was made to cruise on the sand. The frame looked like it was made from several frames and the wheels had a full car-sized inner tube and two rims & hubs per wheel." - Link.

Terry McKean's "Wackercycle"

Bill writes in with this excellent homemade weed wacker powered bicycle -
"Whilst travelling south on the Pacific Coast Highway (CA 1) in November of 2006, I happened to stop at the restaurant/deli/convenience store in fabulous Gorda, CA. Up rode this chap on his home-built "moped" and I snapped these photos. Sadly, I neglected to get a photo of Terry, the maker." - Link.

Powerbike - a bicycle and a playground slide

Besides the interesting artist's statement and overview, this also looks like a fun bicycle -
"Powerbike," is a marvel of metaphoric simplicity. The artist has devised a user-friendly installation that is a mixture of bike and playground slide. Would-be participants are encouraged to mount a ladder whose every step contains words such as "rich," "healthy," "handsome" or "powerful." In doing so, they will eventually reach the photos of "dream girls" on a nearby transparent canvas. However, the effect is entirely the opposite. As the ladder is climbed, the pictures recede from view. This is because each step drives the bicycle backwards. [via] - Link.

HOW TO - Make a Ski bike

Oblongata writes -
"This will show you one way to build yourself a Ski Bike (aka Snow Bike, Skibob, Skike, or Skicycle). It is a downhill only machine and if you like bikes a lot, then it will probably keep a stupid grin plastered on your face all the way down whatever crazy hills you choose to take it on. It is easier to ride than it looks and is quite stable at high speeds (not sure about the speeds you could achieve at a ski hill, but its worked great for average hills in Wisconsin). There are many ways you could build one of these, this is just one way to get you started." - Link.

DIY VR Bike simulator

I Make projects has an awesome DIY VR Bike simulator. Some PVC, a hacked PS2 controller, the Rockstar game "BULLY" on a projector, and a few parts from the workbench results in a crude but effective "virtual bike
"Using an exercise bike equipped with a few modifications, you can effectively simulate riding your exercise bike in and around the town of Bullworth in the Playstation2 game "BULLY" by Rockstar.
You pedal and steer on the exercise bike, and these actions are mirrored in the game, allowing you to virtually ride your bike in and around the town and surrounding areas in the game, complete with cars and pedestrians sharing the roads and sidewalks with you. The faster you pedal on the exercise bike, the faster you go in the game. This whole method should in theory also work with GTA:San Andreas which also has a similar bike mechanic (but a much larger and more visually varied game world than BULLY has).
This is essentially a custom controller interface to an excercise bike, but in addition to the controls it's also the positioning of the bike in front of a big screen like a projector (my projector is from Lumenlab) and the choice of a game with a good matching "bike" presentation that really makes this whole greater than the sum of its parts." Thanks Don! - Link.

Julian writes - "Flickr Photos of a completed "No Weld" recumbent. I always wanted a recumbent but didn't want to pay the money. I built this "No Weld Recumbent" from bits found via the local FreeCycle mailing list and the local dumps and recycling centres. It's taken about 4 weeks of weekends." - Link.

HOW TO - Mountain Lion chopper bicycle

Atomic Zombie Extreme Machines writes -
"It's always fun when building a chopper from a complete bicycle to keep some of the original character in the bike. Like one of the other choppers we built, Granny's Nightmare, I try to keep the theme of the original mountain bike in this chopper, The Mountain Lion.
To create a chopper rebellious to the "normality" of every day life, yet still claim to be worthy of trail riding, one will need a heavy mountain bike with front suspension. Where does one find a scrap suspension mountain bike? The city dump of course! That's where many Atomic Zombie Extreme Machines krew members find all kinds of parts for their creations..." - Link.

DIY Kid's tandem bicycle & rail bike!

MAKE Flickr photo pool member Pekar writes - "I started out making a kids' cargo hauler, but it ended up a tandem. It only took one day. I had to weld them together, and fabricate the dual chainring. The top tube just bolts onto the seatpost clamp. It's hands on shoulders for the stoker. Next one will be a 20" wheel, so older kids can use it. This one might be a bit much, we'll see. An adult can ride on the back and pedal on the front." [via] - Link & bicycle hacks set.
