Japan's "painful cars" (and bikes and motorcycles)

Cool Hunting points us to a piece on Seneca Blog about the stickered, painted, and tricked-out anime and games cars shown at the latest twice-annual Comiket convention in Japan. Cool Hunting writes:
Typical decor include stickers of popular anime "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and erotic PC game "Fate/Stay Night." But it's not just the exterior that get dolled up. Itasha are also noted for their unabashedly nerdy interiors that include figurine stands and character pillows. Itasha have moved beyond automobiles and have expanded to bicycles. Yes, there are nerd sticker bikes, too. Talk about otaku pride.
The cars are called "itasha," which translates to "painful car," but may be a play on "Italian car."

Amazing monocycle replica

You may have seen images of this gorgeously crafted "monocycle/monowheel" replica (of an 1873 French design) making its way through the series of tubes. It was for sale, briefly, on eBay (with starting bid at US$13,000).

Korean CargoCycles

Kevin Kelly's Street Use has these (and other) pics of motorcycles and bikes, used in the Dong Dae Mun Market of Seoul, to circulate heavy loads around town. Says the photographer:
These bikes are the grease that make the market smooth, you see them ferrying ridiculously big loads for 500 metres or so to where the products are needed... Note the carefully street modded/welded carrying beds with 90 degree load supports. I've seen fridges, washing machines and dish washers carried on these things without trouble, even the bicycles.

Office chair bike

Woodenbikes writes -
A recumbent bike with a very comfy seat. It's a 35 pount leather executive office chair connected to a 16" (little girl's) Princess bike re-welded into a recumbent (recliner bike) and using a piece of another donor bike frame. I built it in honor of "Bike to Work Day".Office chair bike - Link.

HOW TO - Make DC Bicycle pedal power generators

Here's how to make DC Bicycle pedal power generators from the folks as Science Shareware -
Here you can learn to create your own green power electricity using a pedal power bicycle generator. We setup the 24 bicycle power generators at the 2007 Coachella Music and Arts Festival, 60,000 people a day for 3 days in the desert - Indio California. The bike generators were used for charging cell phones.DC Bicycle pedal power generator - Link.

The sideways bike

Being dyslexic, just looking at the videos of Boston-based bike-builder Michael Killian's "sideways bike," makes my noggin throb. You ride and pedal the bike sideways, and steer front and rear (independently). His site has numerous videos, pics, and links to media coverage of his various bike projects.

Playaflies
I've only been to Burningman once and I couldn't help but look at things as electronics projects and kits - one of projects "playaflies" consisted of LEDs inside ping pong balls and then attached to wires/PVC pipe, at night when attached to a bicycle they take on the movement of the rider as they move about, it's a neat effect - here's more about them as well as how to make your own... Propeller driven bicycle (recumbent trike) - Human powered
TVeditor writes -
A soothingly quiet trike driven by a 7-ft., pedal-powered propeller. I spend a month a year working on a commercial fishing boat with a loud diesel engine, and the greatest sound in the world is to hear it turn off. Recumbent trike built from aircraft-supply cro-moly tubing and salvaged bike parts. Prop hot-wire-cut pink foam, coated it with fiberglass — and then added LED lights so the blades display colored patterns as they turn.Propeller Driven Bicycle (Recumbent Trike) - Human Powered - [via] Link.

HOW TO - Make a monster quartz halogen bike light

Dan writes -
It was a dark and stormy night...and the 3-watt generator lamp was sporadic, cutting out altogether each time a whiff of snow happened to come between its roller and the tire. "There's got to be something better," the mad cyclist thinks to himself as he squints to make out the faint halo of light cast by the 3-watt bottle dynamo generator.HOW TO - Make a monster quartz halogen bike light - Link. That mad cyclist happened to be yours truly, and the above situation real to life--and the inspiration for the MONSTER Quartz Halogen Bike Light!
The cost of this project was somewhere around $100. I say 'around' because I already had some of the hardware!

HOW TO - Make bike gear windchimes

Offspringin writes -
Make your own unique windchime out of bike gears. Of course you can use any bike parts you want but the varying sizes of the gears produce different ringing sounds in the wind. You can use your imagination and come up with whatever you want. Paint, no paint, change the size, change the length, a great quick project with almost certain great results.Bike Gear Windchime - Link.
