Exploratorium: Maker Saturday Webcasts- Making Your Own Kind of Music

Make 942
Making Your Own Kind of Music
8/4/2007 1:00 PM PDT

When Ezra Daly couldn't find a good slap bass guitar for less than $1,000, he looked around for the materials to build his own--and the Frankenbass was born. It was created from a Moto Guzzi motorcycle gas tank, a chrome tailpipe, and scrap mahogany. Ezra will demonstrate the process of making instruments from recycled components and will play the Frankenbass. Nerdcore, hip-hop musician Doc Popular is a circuit-bender who will be performing with toy instruments he has hacked. Doc describes his approach as "anti-theory," in which he connects wires and sees what happens.

Ezra is a motorcycle luthier who created the Frankenbass on his bedroom floor to debut with a psychobilly band called Buddy's Riot. Doc Popular (aka Brian Roberts) is a video editor, marketing guru, and third-place world yo-yo champion in 2000 - Link.

Multimeter Tutorial - Learning about continuity

Mastechopen-500
Nice tutorial on using a multimeter and continuity -

You might be asking, "What is continuity?" But don't worry, it's quite simple! Continuity means, are two things electrically connected. So if two electronic parts are connected with a wire, they are continuous. If they are connected with cotton string, they are not: while they are connected, the cotton string is not conductive.

For some basic circuits you can just look to see where the wires go to determine continuity but it's always wise to use a multimeter. Sometimes wires break or you're tired and can't easily follow all the PCB traces.

Hackers on a Plane - Defcon and CCC Camp

Hackersonaplane2

I'm on my way to Defcon for the weekend. I'm looking forward to meeting people and seeing cool projects! Some friends and I are competing in the robot competition with an autonomous gun shooting robot we built for target shooting.

Then on Monday, I get on a plane with 38 other hackers and we're off to Germany for CCC camp. If you're travelling from Dusseldorf, consider getting a ticket for the flight straight into camp! (I donated my spot to save C-Base, so I'll be in the van.) I'm looking forward to sleeping on a cot for a week while hanging out with hackers and hackery. Then I'm off on a hacker tour of Europe to return on August 20th. Stay tuned for updates!

NYC Maker makes 1775 submarine - gets cited by US Coast Guard

Ht Nypd Sub 070803 Ms
Breaking news!!! -

A Brooklyn man in a Revolutionary War-era submarine was cited by the U.S. Coast Guard for drifting into a security zone and unsafe sailing in the East River near the Queen Mary 2 luxury liner, the Coast Guard and New York City Police Department announced Friday.

The man in the replica vessel was identified as 35-year-old Philip "Duke" Riley from Brooklyn, N.Y., according to Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Seth Johnson.

Authorities said it was the second time Riley floated the vessel in the vicinity of the cruise ship. The submarine, which reportedly did not have a mechanical propulsion system, was being towed by two other men in a rowboat.

Plastic bag crafts

Fusableplasticbag
Nat @ CRAFT has a TON of things you can do with plastic bags, she writes -

We all know how bad plastic grocery bags are for the environment. Research suggests that 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. The city of San Francisco will be first city in the U.S. to take a stand and ban plastic bags in large markets and pharmacies.

But what can a crafter do to help the cause? Round up the bags you do have laying around in the house or collect them from neighbors and friends to start reusing plastic bags for your next craft project. Here's a post rounding up some of the best projects we've seen around. Sew 'em up, cut them into strips for knitting or crochet -- the possibilities are endless!

Concrete crickets

Michael writes -

Graffiti is one of the most powerful and most personal displays in the urban experience, and can be used to make statements, tag territory, spread messages -- urban markup language in practice. However, the output is nearly always visual in nature, making this experience one-dimensional. Furthermore, rarely does the work have a brain of its own, and is usually incapable of reacting to anybody observing it.
Concrete Crickets was created to address this deficit, creating small devices that will be aware of passers-by as well as other units of their kind. Each unit consists of a sound generator, amp, speaker and sensory system, and is housed in camouflage appropriate to the streets of the city -- soda cans, cigarette packs, and the like.

The MIDI viewport

View
Atmel based MIDI data analyzer -

The MIDI Viewport is a data analyzer for MIDI messages. But it is also much more. Handheld, battery powered, and compact, it displays MIDI data in the order it is received, one byte at a time--using an LCD 2 line by 16 character display. Connected to a keyboard or sequencer it will tell you, in English, which MIDI events are being sent by the device. You can scroll through the 64-byte buffer to see what is really going on in your MIDI system.

Get loopy with the DIY $10 Ableton Footcontroller (no soldering required)

Loopy
Peter writes -

Mike Una has just written up a tutorial on how to make a $10 foot controller for music applications like Ableton Live, fashioned out of a QWERTY keyboard. (Other possible applications: gaming, VJing.) Clever keyboard mappings allow you to use your feet to control elaborate live music performances, whether you're a beatboxer, keyboardist, DJ, or violinist. We'd love to see what people do with it.

Single tube nixie clock

Mmmm, glowie -

Single Tube clock blinks out the current time number by number. Quite easy to read! This clock is utilizing a Russian ИН-1 (IN-1) Nixie Tube & Socket. The PCB was home-made using the board designed by SQ8CBY. The original design and code for the PIC 16F84A was created by Electronics and More. The board incorporates both a High Voltage step-up circuit (originally designed by Lance Turner) and logic. The clock is powered by a 9v wall-wart.
