Check this out, if you hadn’t heard of it already – “Manhattan Style” circuit building technique. I found it off of opencircuits.com. You have to scroll down a bit to get to the pictures, but the circuits are really beautiful. It really makes me want to consider aesthetics a little more the next time I need to throw something together. P.S. Issue # 10 RAWKS!

You can get similar results (at more cost) by doing the same thing (plain PC board) but using SurfBoards as the mounting platforms. Of course, SurfBoards allow the use of surface-mount circuits with this technique.
A great construction article. Great technique, plenty of basic advice, lots of details, fun to read. The results are going to be great with that ground plane.
I’ll add this technique to really improve the use of wire-leaded components in my SurfBoarded prototypes.
These methods are particularly good for RF as you get excellent ground planes.
Heh… my dad has been building RF electronics in this manner for years!
K8IQY
An example of his work (one of his QRP rigs).
K8IQY is mentioned prominently in this paper. I just saw his site for the first time last night, and WOW! The kids and I just sat and stared at the project photos in awe. I don’t know the first thing about Ham radio, but I intend to bring this technique into the stuff I build wherever possible.
I first saw this done in a workshop by Tetsuo Kogawa, who uses it to build tiny low-power radio transmitters.
The beauty and simplicity of the technique blew my mind.
