30,000 matches… ignited

Science

What happens when 30,000 match-heads are ignited? This. The mushroom cloud is pretty impressive.

absolutely awesome, and obviously incredibly dangerous. It should go without saying this is a great way to get a darwin award but match bombs are tons of fun. Definately the biggest I’ve ever seen.

awesome. we used to fill tennis balls with that and hit them with baseball bats… not that I’d advise anyone to do that but it sure was fun.

Phil pushes the limit again :) I cringe every time I see a post like this one about how to make a bomb. I know, you re-worded the video to simply say “30,000 matches ignited” which sounds less threatening than a “bomb”. I just don’t want to see MAKE being targeted by some lawsuit, or senate hearing, homeland Security, etc…
And for the record… yes it was cool! But things like bomb making should not be on the pages/blog of make… Imho.

    Range is great.

Looked to me like the most dangerous part was cutting the heads off- right into a bucket full of other matchheads! One wrong flick of the knife and you ignite the ‘strike anywhere’ match, which ignites the ones in the bucket, which ignites your face. Where were the gloves? Faceshield? Fire extinguisher?

And I think it was proper to title it “…ignited” instead of “bomb” because it wasn’t a bomb.

Next time any of you put all your friends to work trimming matchheads, by God put ’em in a tightly closed metal container before “igniting” them. We loves loud booms and shrapnel, we does.

And please post MORE incendiary/thermite/explosion videos and how-to’s! Tinkering is tinkering, after all, and information should be freely available (and please, don’t forget the disclaimers and safety warnings!)

BTW: We might want to start calling these types of things “very fast reactions” or better yet “extreme oxidation” or anything nicer than “bomb,” which is nowadays more associated with horrifying violence than youthful experimentation like when I was a kid (yes, I have all my fingers). “Extreme oxidation” even sounds like a new sport. Names are important, after all…

“Match Head Bomb” (Bad. Gets you on a list somewhere)
“30,000 Matchheads Reacting Really Quickly” (Not so good, but better)
“X-TREME Oxidation- 30K Matches!” (Hmmm, intriguing. Let’s watch!)
