Homemade CatCamera

Catcam7
Catcam9
Another cat project today... J.Perthold made a camera that takes pictures automatically... from a cat! -

Sometimes I have some challenging ideas, or crazy like some other people would say. This time I thought about our cat who is the whole day out, returning sometimes hungry sometimes not, sometimes with traces of fights, sometimes he stay also the night out.
When he finally returns, I wonder where he was and what he did during his day. This brought me to the idea to equip the cat with a camera. The plan was to put a little camera around his neck which takes every few minutes a picture. After he is returning, the camera would show his day. First I thought about transmitting live pictures from a remote RF camera, but the equipment is too expensive and battery consumption is too high.

So the idea was born and split into these parts:

  • find small, lightweight, inexpensive digital camera
  • develop a controller for the camera
  • protect the camera from cat attack
  • mount equipment to cat

HOW TO - Make SUPER CATNIP... isolation of nepetalactone from catnip

F3Lwx69F23Z371E.Medium

Talbotron22 shows you how to make SUPER CATNIP... isolation of nepetalactone from catnip -

At least two thirds of domestic cats "enjoy" the effects of Nepeta, a.k.a. "catnip." But do they it enjoy it enough? If humans were able to isolate the active ingredient in catnip, could we not use it to become omnipowerful CATGODS? Imagine the possibilities! What fool wouldn't want their own personal cat army? A massive fuzzy force with which to execute your every bidding? A united, unquestioning militia that requires nothing other than unfettered access to the super-powerful catnip products that give their adorable cuddly lives meaning?

Nepetalactone is the active ingredient in catnip.* Today we are going to isolate nepetalactone in its pure form through a steam distillation. The distilled liquid will be extracted with an organic solvent (toluene), refined, then evaporated to give the final product.

Now I know what you're thinking: is it safe for cats to be around such a concentrated extract of catnip? Hell yes! Within reason. And we're all reasonable people. Pure nepetalactone has been studied on cats extensively. In fact, "catnip oil" that is available from botanical stores is essentially just nepetalactone, and it is widely used in homeopathic medicine. More details later.

* Note: pure nepetalactone will not enable you to create a cat army.

The week in tools

Top5-Fiveup-0601
Chuck drops some tools of the week on us -

Toolmonger readers tell us that they consider palm sanders archaic, recommending instead random orbital sanders for more control and power. We looked at a slick new one from Festool that switches between random orbital and pure rotary - to remove material quickly - on the fly. Readers also gave us the low-down on deck screws, comparing Deck Mate's famous offering to standard square-drive and the more recent LOX anti-camout models. In short: square-drive offers the best price-to-performance deal, but YMMV. MAC Tools also announced an expansion of their spline-type spherical sockets this week. These sockets (like those offered by Snap-on, Husky, and others as well) can handle 6-point, 12-point, splined, Torx, square, and even half-rounded fastener heads. Readers enjoyed our mention of unusual electronics supplier Sparkfun. We met them at Maker Faire, and quickly added them to our "little black book." Finally, we made our yearly Father's Day gift recommendation: a good-qualty-but-not-too-expensive pocket knife - the kind he'll carry every day and use in projects for years to come.

Mousey is a mouse made of scavenged materials. Above is a common LM 386 Op Amp which is the chip that balances the input from the IR emitters to make the robot light seeking. If you're not a scavenger you can also get the parts from solarbotics.com.

Weekend Projects is sponsored by Microchip Technology. Check out their seminars and 16 bit contest.

Make sure to download the pdf and read the article for all the background and step by step instructions! If you want to get the Make: Video Podcast and PDFcast downloaded automatically, you can subscribe in itunes. - Link

Toenail necklace

Toenail Necklace Labeled
Jan Ryerse made a necklace out of busted toenails from marathon running, yikes-

Ryerse, who estimates he's run more than 50,000 miles, also says ultrarunning gives him a profound sense of well-being. It helps him sleep better and raises his energy.

But, he says, an ultrarunner's body will do some strange things in an ultramarathon. For instance, hands and feet swell to the point where a runner may have to change into larger shoes. And they frequently lose toenails.

"They get black from pounding into the top of your shoes," Ryerse says. "I have a toenail necklace. From a distance it looks kind of nice. It looks like it's made of seashells."

Most ultrarunners will tell you that the shared experience of mentally and physically battling the incomprehensible is by far the biggest draw.

Build a universal wireless repeater appliance

wrt54g_20070530.jpg
Jason @ Hackszine
writes -

The beta-v24 version of the DD-WRT firmware has a new feature that allows it to function as a standalone range expander. This is similar to the functionality provided by a wireless distribution system (WDS) network configuration, but unlike traditional WDS, the repeater router emulates a standard client connection to the parent router. This eliminates the need to have two DD-WRT supported routers, running the same firmware, both set up specially for this purpose.

Simply put, you can configure a single repeater appliance and it will work in conjunction with the wireless router you normaly use at your home or office, regardless of the primary router's model or firmware. There's even an "AutoAP" option, which will allow your repeater to automatically monitor and connect to the access point with the strongest signal.

Complete instructions for getting this set up are available at the DD-WRT forums - Link.

Big Ball of Connectivity

Here's Paul Gierow's "big ball of connectivity" - satellite communications anywhere, anytime, via a blow-up antenna -

No, it's not a giant beach ball. It's an ultralight, ultraportable antenna tucked inside an inflatable shell that can pull down a superfast broadband satellite connection at any location. The GATR-Com is designed for disaster-relief responders, far-flung video producers and front-line troops--anyone whose job (or life) depends on getting digital information--video, Internet, calls--in and out of remote places.

This is the workbench we designed and built for the apartment living room. The workbench needed to allow us to work on our electronics projects either standing or sitting on a stool. We also needed to build a workbench that would come apart easily enough to make moving it bearable. This same basic design would be very easy to scale depending on your own needs.
