Here's a simple and easy way to make PVC stage backdrops or room dividers, Dkrmwiz writes -
our elementary school doesn't have a stage. 5th grade graduation usually meant decorating the back wall of the gym. i had to take this down last year, it involved a 10 ft ladder! since i don't get hazzard pay, i had to come up with something else.i searched the internet to no avail... so one brain fart later this was born!instructables : PVC stage backdrop or room divider : intro - [via] Link.

British artist installs phone link to dying glacier

You can call a glacier to check up on it...kinda sad.
With the help of sponsors, Virgin Mobile and Dolphinear, Paterson was able to drop a hydrophone into the icy lagoon where the glacier is disappearing and pick up the sounds.British artist installs phone link to dying glacier | Lifestyle | Reuters - [via] Link. The waterproof microphone is linked to a phone and amplifier housed in a tent on land.
The work, entitled "Vatnajokull (the sound of)", will continue until June 13.
Only one caller at a time can get through, which was deliberate so people can have a "one-to-one beautiful and intimate moment" with the glacier, she said. Calls to the number, 07758 225698, are charged at international rates.

HOW TO - Build a drip system

Norm writes -
[Here are the] basic materials to build channel to hold four 3 gallon pots in drip system. I chose these materials because of either their availability or cost. The fence boards cost 99 cents(US) each at Home Depot. The furring strip was 65 cents,(I substituted a couple pieces of scrap 1x4 for part of the furring strip), the plastic is greenhouse covering, but could be common 6 mil plastic sheeting if protected from the sun. The ground cloth is used to keep the sun from hitting the nutrient, and help hold the pots in place. This prevents algae growth. Any non metal material that will block the sun could be used. There are any number of substutite materials that could be used instead of the ones shown as long as the basic rules of no toxic material or any metal other than stanless steel in contact with the nutrient.Drip system - Link.

The Thermoacoustic organ

Richard writes in-
I've always been interested in sterling engines and how just by a temperature gradient work could be done. This is attractive technology since anything that produces heat (solar death ray) can be converted into other forms of energy ie. acoustical or electrical. While doing research on the subject, I was intrigued by the thermalacoustic engine. This thermalacoustic effect can be used as a cooler, an engine, or a musical instrument as shown in this website. This maker shows how he using items like exhaust caps to control the musical notes. When I found this, I instantly thought of MAKE. I hope yall enjoy. The Thermoacoustic Organ - Link & video.

Become a criminal investigator, with superglue
Sam writes -
This instructable describes the process of building a chamber for superglue fuming. Superglue fuming is a method employed by criminal investigators in order to take and preserve fingerprints, before sending them to the lab. By heating superglue, the fumes react with the oils left by the fingers on the suspect object, revealing latent fingerprints and preserving them. Making a fuming chamber is actually pretty simple and relatively safe, if you follow a few safety precautions. I will show you how to build a quick makeshift chamber that nonetheless works very well.Become a criminal investigator - superglue fuming - Link.

Bare bones Arduino time lapse
Steve writes -
Modern Device has a *really* sweet electronics kit for $15 that has most of the Arduino functionality at about half the price. What’s even better is that it’s about 1/3 smaller than the arduino board. Also, it now has 6 pulse width modulators due to it using an upgraded version of the microcontroller chip than the older one I had. What’s really fantastic is that this kit goes together really easily, and if you buy 10 of them, the price drops to $10 a piece… ! And it’s still an arduino! So the programming environment is cross platform and open source… just like the hardware!bare bones arduino at Steve Cooley Fine Art - Link.
