Congrats to Tony for selling his Star Trek flat!

SCI-FI fan Tony Alleyne has sold his Star Trek-themed flat for an astronomical £425,000 — FIVE TIMES its market value.

Enterprising Tony, 54, worked eight hours a day for two years and spent £30,000 turning his one-bed studio into the starship Voyager’s flight deck.

Other flats in his block in Hinckley, Leics, have sold for a modest £80,000.

But Tony put his up for sale on eBay a month ago with a guide price of £130,000.

Good for him! I remember reading an article about him a while ago and it had made it seem like this project had made him penniless and lost his marriage. While those appear to be exaggerated I do think he was having some financial problems at some point. In any case, it’s nice to see someone rewarded handsomely for something as creative as this.

Just focusing on the finances of this little project and ignoring taxes he’s made £315,000 on a two year project. That’s $310,000 a year! It he’s willing to live at the US median income for a couple years he’ll have a lot more time for a life than I ever will at my corporate type job.

Maybe I should pick up some plexiglass on the way home.

Well, focusing solely on the finances, it has turned out to be a nice little earner.

However, those are two very different photos of Tony. I don’t know how far apart they were taken, but it seems to me that this project(*) of his has put a lot more than two years on his face.

That plexiglass just might cost you more than you realise.

    (* hobby? diversion? obsession?)
