Slurpr – the mother of all wardrive boxes

Mark Hoekstra made this for his friend Boris, a monster router that grabs all the available Wi-Fi and gives you an uberconnection, he writes… –

At this moment I can see 8 different signals. Some are closed networks but most are open and available. I can only connect to one at a time so I tend to just pick the one with the best signal. But what if I could connect to all the networks at the same time and combine their bandwith?

Yeah, that is what I need!

A big, fat access point with a large antenna and a bunch of Wi-Fi cards that automatically connect to the strongest signals it can pick up. Then it would combine all these signals into one FreeLoading Broadband Canal for me to use.

    Back of the envelope calculations:

High Speed USB gives us 480 Mbps theoretical or ~40MBps real world best case, probably significantly less.

Wireless USB adapter gives us 6.75MBs theoretical. For six adapters that’s 40.5MBs theoretical, real world probably significantly less.

NETGEAR WG111 Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter
    x 6 = $107.70 @ $17.95 ea (Amazon)

    Dekcell CPA-1059 USB 2.0 Hi-Speed 7-Port Hub
    x 1 = $11.95 (Amazon)

Miscelaneous parts, shipping, Murphy’s law, and so on
    x 1 = $75

So, assuming you already have a laptop with Linux installed and a Hi Speed USB 2.0 host you may be able to build an equivalent setup for roughly $200.

Use directional antennas with USB adapter mounted direct. Run USB cable from antenna/adapter assembly to hub.

    Dunno. Might work.
