Is that maple, spruce, pine? These two books look really helpful - Identifying Wood: Accurate Results with Simple Tools by Bruce Hoadley - [via] Link & also by the same author, Understanding Wood: A Craftsman's Guide to Wood Technology - Link.

ZOMG! Hoadley is the ultimate source for gaining an understanding of wood. If you put wood into any of your projets, you MUST read Hoadley's books.

Despite this comical cover, Hoadley's Understanding Wood really is a very good book -- essential reading for the serious woodworker.
I keep my copy close to Bob Flexner's book Understanding Wood Finishing. Another essential book for woodworkers.

This book does not lack in quality of information but as a book to be used regularly for reference the quality is very poor. After only a few weeks of normal use the pages began seperating from the bindigs.
