HOW TO – Stage lights on the cheap

The goal of this project was to help out a friend’s band by making a lighting kit for their shows that didn’t cost the $150+ dollars that a normal light kit costs. It also helps out a lot when I record their concerts to make sure the lighting isn’t too dim. The setup I wound up with has three dimmable color lights that can be clamped onto whatever stand you wish. You could easily expand out this setup to use however many lights you need though.

Another alternative is lawn lights. 12 volt, color filters, and a lawn stake base that can be adapted to a work light stand.

We used the dual halogen worklights that came on the stand for only 1 (one) gig because of the high heat generated. Clamp lights were then tried, but the heat factor was still there, and it was difficult to put gels (colored filters) on them. The lawn lights were sourced cheaply at the local dollar store, and worked well until we got a real tree with a multi scene setup.

lawn light spotlight bulbs are in some home decor centers too. Add a friend and you have a follow-spot, or it works to highlight parts of the stage, etc.

Having a bunch of 110v, 60hz lines running around wired off dimmers is a recipe for buzzzzzz in the mains (speakers) too. We had a battery charger to a deep cycle marine battery powering the lawn lights. Was handy at teardown too- no matter what house lights/power did, we were well lit. (heh heh…punny!)

didnt need dimmers-they were about the right brightness for the little places we played.

Memories from the late 80’s. Good times!
