Jeez, this is a really beautiful LED project, source and schematics included -
We set out to harness the power of the LED. As a single discrete element, the LED is a simple binary indicator. By grouping many LEDs together, like pixels, more and more information can be conveyed. The trick is to find the most efficient way of addressing the state of each LED.

Nice! I like how well-documented the project is. Many pages just throw up a schematic (if even that).
I am, however, amused by the carefully worded explanation quoted above. In that vein, I humbly submit my own observation:
As a single discrete element, a character in the English alphabet can indicate one of twenty-six states. By grouping many characters together, like letters, more and more information can be conveyed.
