DIY Halloween - amazing costumes, scary tech, pumpkins and gross food - officially awesome
There's still plenty of time to enter the MAKE & CRAFT Halloween contest (details/enter here) but here's a quick look at just *some* of DIY, hacked, modded, geeked out Halloween fun Makers around have scared up! There are about 500 and counting, they're not just pictures either, many are complete how-tos! ... It's frighteningly awesome!

Homemade sushi costumes & how to make a shrimp hat!
Hellen sent in these great costume pics for the MAKE Halloween contest, she writes - "We held a last minute sewing circle to bust these Sushi Costumes out. Trojan battle armor made from name plates (from past coworkers!)
Lance writes - "As of Halloween 2004, I'd been working at Nanogen for 6 & 1/2 years. During that time, I'd been collecting the name plates of people who had left the company for one reason or another just in case I could find some practical use for them. Well, my inspiration came that year when it was time to figure out what to be for Halloween. I had seen the movie Troy recently and thought to myself, I think I can make Trojan-style battle armor out of them there name plates. The results were quite nice (please excuse the pasty white man-thighs). It turns out that the costume was a complete success at the annual Nanogen Halloween costume contest/party. During the party, the costume was the center of attention. Several people were compelled to read all the names on the armor and reminisce about colleagues from years past. As a bonus, I received the most votes for best costume and took home the $100 first place prize." - Link.

HOW TO - Easy Itty-Bitty Blinky LED Jack-O'-Lantern
Windell writes - "Here's my favorite design for a jack-o-lantern; it's a (tiny) mini-pumpkin carved with the circuit diagram symbol for a light-emitting diode. Naturally, it's lit by an LED. This LED circuit inside this one is a TireFly, which is a type of blinky light designed to mount on the tires of a bicycle. You can get these things at regular hardware stores or sporting goods stores-- I got mine at Target-- and so this is one of the easiest and quickest ways to get an LED in your pumpkin. HOW TO - Make an Oscar the grouch costume
Trash never looks so crafty! Menuet writes - "An Oscar the grouch costume. Cut the bottom out of the trash can, and supported it with bungee cords on my belt. Lid is velcroed to my head. I'm wearing a green ski mask, sweater and black gloves with a MESSLOAD of yarn glued on. " - Link.

RoboWolf kid-designed costume
Connor combined the best of wolves and robots for this MAKE & CRAFT contest entry... Truffulatuft writes - "There are 2 pics of my son's Robot Wolf halloween costume for your contest. He is eight years old. It was his design, based on this picture we found on the web http://triggur.org/costume/mech/. We made the costume together. The RobotWolf costume out of recycled cardboard, paper mache, a bucket, a dryer vent, old boots, silver paint and a lot of tape and hot glue." - Link.

Shaun of the Dead cricket bat & costume...
John shows you how to make your own 'Shaun of the Dead' cricket bat, he writes - "At the last second I decided to go ahead and make a Halloween costume. I was inspired by a commercial for the movie 'Shaun of the Dead'. Funny zombie movie. How cool would that be? I mean I'm going to go out and oversee my kids why not wear something fun? I quickly collected that basics, white shirt, red tie, name badge, and a cricket bat. The first three are easy, I can either make or buy those but a cricket bat is something that I'm a bit short on. I've held one before so I know what they look like up close so armed with that and a few photos off the 'net I can come up with something that should look pretty close to a bat. As I don't have a wood shop I am going to be using the classic cardboard for the blade. I have a wooden stake from some get rich fast crook that posted his ads illegally on the property my office is located at. At lest something honest came from their signs. Hot glue, gaffers tape... Pronteon shows how to make a remote power control for battery powered devices... - "Thin conductors on both sides of a thin insulator are connected by wires to a remote switch. Slide it between the batteries. It breaks the connection until the switch is turned on. In this case, the battery powered loud and obnoxious talking halloween skull was the face of Leaf Boy, a leaf stuffed guy. Too much trouble to get to the power switch, so he needed a power switch on a wire. Also it would make him shut the heck up until someone was in the right spot for him to yell at them." - Link.

Ugly doll costume
Travis writes - "we are super happy to submit this to the halloween costumes list. my wife stayed up all night making my son's favorite ugly doll into a little costume, 2 year old sized. she used some wool and foam and felt, and this stuff called stitch witchery, which meant there was no sewing involved, except for the big stitches holding the eyes and nose on."

Homemade Barbarian armor - Halloween costume
Ursuscelticus made this great homemade barbarian armor costume! - "The hat, weapons, and boots were bought in the Halloween section of local stores. The oversized mens t-shirt and black sweats came from a thrift store. Total cost of materials: around $75. I bought way more fabric than I needed.
