Sparkyfaisca writes – “Artist creates ‘shopping trolley art’ to highlight RiverCare and spearhead recruitment campaign. Anglian Water has commissioned the world’s first river creature sculptures made entirelyfrom shopping trolleys. These amazing creations highlight some of the rubbish pulled from rivers in the region by RiverCare volunteers every week. The sculptures are being used to head an educational campaign, encouraging more volunteers to adopt a stretch of river by getting involved in, or setting up, a local RiverCare group. World-renowned artist Ptolemy Elrington has transformed discarded shopping trolleys into beautiful sculptures.” Thanks Pekar – Link.

If someone stole your car and left it battered but salvagable in a vacant lot, does that mean I am free to keep it and cut it up into sculpture? Even though they are often seen discarded around the urban landscape, these shopping carts aren’t litter, they’re stolen property. The stores that own them are interested in getting them back, so long as the cost of doing so is less than that of replacing the cart. The rusty and battered ones they’re probably willing to write off, but they’d want the shiniest and most intact ones, the same ones that are most desirable for sculpture and furniture projects. If the number of carts that the stores are able to reclaim starts to drop because people are turning them into storks and armchairs, they are going to stop overlooking the loss and start to legally pursue the artists.
