    This is my friend Roger’s bike, actually not home made, but I can’t recall the brand.

    The REALLY cool thing about the bike is the back wheel. As you put pressure on the pedals, the back wheel is pushed down against the ground, but when you stop pushing on the pedals a spring keeps the back wheel and the weight is shifted to the blade close to the middle of the bike.

    We have two of these that we bought ten or twelve years ago and a bike-store going-out-of-business sale. Hungarian friends told us that they originated in Hungary and were used mostly for riding down icy hills — and that only crazy people would do it. They are very difficult to ride. If you actually want to build an ice bike, look at the ones from the “Ice Bike World Championships” held every year near Minneapolis/St. Paul. (Some examples here and on the Minnesota Human-Powered Vehicle website
