Incredible sculptures that you wind up – the site shows how they’re made and has some Flash movies to see them in action – [viavia] – Link.

I have one (Variation Fire) that I bought back in 2003. I absolutely love it. It’s a definite conversation piece. What’s most incredible is that the thing runs for about 16 hours on a single wind-up.

I’ve seen this man’s work displayed in a shop window in NYC and I’ve visited his website. The artistic designs are very neat to see, but I’m more interested in the mechanisms that make it work (ie. pulleys, escapements, levers, and how they all interact). Does anyone have any drawings or photos (ie. close up side-shots) of its mechanisms?
