Firebug – Build a boat and learn to sail

4DMichael writes “While looking up the Firebug extension for Firefox, I ran into this site about a simple-to-build sailboat from New Zealand called the Firebug. They sell plans and their intention is to foster the skill of amateur boat building. This looks really quite cool.” Link. Anyone ever build one of these?

I have built a somewhat similar style boat called the “Portuquese Style Dinghy” found here: http://personal.eunet.fi/pp/gsahv/dinghy1/simboii.htm I started mine late last fall so I am not quite finished with it. (too cold outside) I need to give it a quick sanding, a coat of paint and put a seat in it. Very fun project, the one I built is made from 2 4×8 sheets of 1/4″ plywood and fiberglass.

There is nothing as frustrating and ultimately satisfying as building your own boat. And the first time you’ve sailed the boat that you’ve built, well, it’s a moment that will stay with you for a long, long time. Of course, I have to plug the boat I’ve built – http://www.stevproj.com/ – the Weekender is a great 16 footer, with a large community of builders and sailors.

I’ve yet to build one, but it’s on my “ToDo” list. I think they’re an excellent boat for an avid sailor to learn to sail. I’ve purchased the plans, but have to finish my current boat projects first.

If you’re looking for an even easier first boatbuilding project, try a “Mouseboat”. Free plans available via the internet. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mouseboats/ It’s an 8′ paddle (or row) boat that’s simple to build. I’m about to finish my first one which has been modified with a full curved deck. A great project to get the kids involved.

    Cheers,
    Mike
