DIY LED Flashlight
AntonOlsen writes "This is an easy to build dc-dc switcher that can drive quite a few LEDs at 3.3V with a single AA battery. Version 1 is going in a mini mag light and I'm thinking version two will make a very light weight bike light." [via & instructions] Link to photos.

It's a pity that the MAX756 is outdated - none of my regular online electronics shops carry it. The improved versions are all very, very small which makes it hard for the casual hobbyist to create this circuit.

The 'LED Museum' has been around for a long time for those integrating LED's and flashlights. Worth a look, if you have not seen it...

Fub: they can't be that old, halted.com doesn't seem to carry them. Looks like MAX756CSA+ is current: http://www.newark.com/jsp/Semiconductors+&+Prototyping/Power+Management+ICs/MAXIM+INTEGRATED+PRODUCTS/MAX756CSA+/displayProduct.jsp?sku=23K6506&_requestid=144115
Perhaps you were hit by a temporary RoHS (lead-free) changeover issue.
