Coming soon, edible lawns?

Ediblelawns“Edible Estates is the brainchild of Fritz Haeg, who has made it his mission to replace the water-guzzling, pesticide-drenched grasslands of American front yards with functional, fruitful plots filled with all things edible. The first lawn revival took place in Salina, Kansas, where a family offered up their conventional front yard for transformation and vowed to maintain the garden as a living, thriving edible installation.” [via] Link. Reminds me of the self reliance efforts of WWII and Victory gardens.

People growing crops in their front yards is one of the nightmare scenarios discussed in The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream.

Interesting idea, but it’s obviously in it’s infancy. In other words, they are showing how it can work functionally, but giving little or no thought to convincing others to follow in their example.

Why do I say this? Because they have given no thought to the asthetics of the yard. Like it or not, people in the suburbs want their front yards to look nice. And chicken wire, soaker hoses, and overgrown vegetable plants do not look nice to most people.

Why not add some attactive landscaping to the yard? Raised planting beds would be nice. They would present a more orderly appearance. The pathways in between could be gravel or flagstone, which doesn’t require water or fertilizer to maintain.

    wow, a vegetable garden.
    What a novel concept!
We used to have one when I was a kid 25 years ago, though it was in our backyard, not in front (where we grew the flowers to decorate the home).

Sounds like a good idea…but I think it is also important to note that the crops so selected should be aesthetically pleasing as well…It is unlikely people will like a bunch of soy plants or worse still sugarcane, growing in their front lawns! But it sure sounds like an interesting idea…if you can combine aestheics and economics, why not indeed!
