HOW TO – Make a DIY flash diffuser

FlashPiers writes “Daylight savings has started now, and it was still quite light, but not light enough, and I really needed to use a flash. The shadows cast from my built-in flash are really harsh and especially prominent in close-up shots, so I made a makeshift light diffuser out of the top of a slide box, lined on the inside with some thin paper. It worked pretty well, as you can see, the photos have a nice soft light.” Link.

    When shooting pictures for the TVR print ad inside the back cover of MAKE issue 04, we found ourselves with out a diffuser for our halogen shop lights … ahem…studio lamps that we were using.

    We ended up grabbing a few handy white dinner plates, and bouncing the halogen lights off the plates, and directing the diffused glow onto the subject.

    Necessity is the mother of improvisation.
