HOW TO - Use MSS for easier music transfer from iTunes
"Getting music to your Symbian phone is not as easy as it should be... If you are using a Nokia phone you may be able to use the Nokia Music Manager (which is part of PC Suite). This How-To shows you how Mass Storage Synchronizer can be used to copy music from iTunes to a memory card (which you can then put in your phone). This does not syncronize iTunes with the phone, it copies music from the PC (iTunes library) to a memory card in a USB memory card reader. " Thanks Ewan! Link.

As seen in MAKE! Fiberglass New Hope C-3PO Star Wars Prop
The C-3PO from MAKE 02 is for sale on eBay "This item is a full size replica of C-3PO from Star Wars "A New Hope". No home is complete without your very own protocol droid. He stands on his own, his eyes light up and there is a speaker in the head for a sound system that the winning bidder could add (sound system not included). The head is moveable from left to right (by hand, not motorized). This c-3po was on the cover of Make Magazine's second issue. This item has taken me 3 years to bring to the point it is now. He is very near completion and only needs a few details. I make no claims to its accuracy, but rather its a best guess." [via] Link.

DIY iPod breakout dock...
Excellent DIY iPod dock for tinkering on panocamera "I needed a quick way to test signal interactions with a microcontroller and an iPod, so for about $50 and an afternoon of soldering, I threw together an iPod dock/breakout box. Ingredients include a small breadboard, and a $15 cheapie usb charger cable, which when stripped of its plastic housing luckily has all 30 dock connector pins ready to solder." Link.

Crafters Saving Penguins
The Tasmanian Conservation Trust put out a call to everyone to use the following pattern to knit small sweaters (or "jumpers") for penguins in a case of a major oil spill. They received an overwhelming response, over 15,000 sweaters! According to the Conservation Trust,"In the case of a major oil spill, these jumpers will be used to help rehabilitate Little penguins (Eudyptula minor) that have been oil affected. Oil clogs the feathers of these tiny seagoing birds, and reduces their insulating and waterproofing qualities. Even worse, the penguins attempt to clean themselves by preening, and rapidly become poisoned." [via] Link. (Additional news story from Australia.)

Making Felt
Felting is the art of matting wool. Any kind of knit that you want more durable can be done through felting. The process of felting can sometimes seem intimidating or complicated. I love this complete feltmaking process with photos for every step from the Handweavers Guild of America. You can use the felting technique for creating ipod cozies, bags, bookcovers, you name it! Functional Paper V8 Engine
Make friend, the Lotharian, says,"This V8 Engine made entirely out of paper with the exception of a few parts (motor, wires, etc.), is fully functional. It features many moving parts which include: a compound crankshaft, a rapid cooling fan, 8 rods, 8 pistons and a complex compound gearbox. The engine is powered by 2 times 1.5V D Batteries and weighs 2.98kg. From start to finish this model took one year to design and construct. There is even a D.I.Y. kit in the works that will be released shortly." Thanks Lotharian! [via] Link.

Bazaar Bizarre
The Bazaar Bizarre craft fair is coming soon to three major cities! November 26-27 in Cleveland, OH and December 11th in both Los Angeles and Boston. Event founder Greg der Ananian says, "Dissatisfied with stencils of country ducks and painted wooden slices of watermelon, I decided to use what I'd learned as a child to express my own interests. To my surprise and delight, a lot of my friends were experiencing the same kind of personal renaissance. How exactly to share these objets de craft was a project upon which we embarked. The result? Bazaar Bizarre." Link.

HOW TO -Bluetooth stereo in the car
Chris writes "Considering how many people bought the HP Bluetooth stereo headphones and got disappointed when the headband snapped, I thought that it was time to do something useful with the 'broken' headphone. We'll take you through all steps of dismantling the Bluetooth receiver and building it into a nice mouse housing with 12v in and line out. And as the device keeps its battery, you can also use this as a portable Bluetooth stereo receiver and plug in you high quality headphones or even connect it to your stereo at home." Link.

World's Greatest... Radio Scanners
Alex (who tried to convince me to race in the Gumball Rally on more than one occasion) has a great article detailing his experiences with radio scanners "When was the last time you saw a trucker pulled over for speeding? I'd always assumed that truckers tipped each other off about speed traps via CB radio. But their secret weapon is the humble radio scanner. Here's how to pick a scanner..." Link.

HOW TO - Make a Joule thief
"In the November 1999 issue of EPE (Everyday Practical Electronics), a small and intriguing circuit was published in the Ingenuity Unlimited section by Z. Kaparnik. It was a very small implementation of a typical transformer feedback single transistor invertor. The transformer was a standard ferrite bead with two windings wound on it and the circuit was using the high voltage pulse generated when the transistor turns off to light an LED from a single 1.5V battery. This page has two variations on the original design to use the simple circuit in a useful manner." Link.
