You can find Phil's song here: Your Audio Book Sounds Silent to Me. ( http://www.his.com/~pshapiro/song.html) If you would, please call/e mail the Fairfax official's listed below. Thanks for your interest. Hal Cauthen, Leader, iLife SIG Fairfax, Va Here's a little background, that Phil put together: The Fairfax County Public Library system is a large library system in Northern Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC. Leaders of the Fairfax Public Libraries think it's a good idea to distribute downloadable audio books to the public in Windows Media format. Regrettably these digital rights managed (DRM) files have been 'locked out', such that they won't download to Macintosh computers, Linux computers or iPods, which --- given the popularity of the iPod -- effectively excludes a large proportion of potential users. Taxpayer funds are being used to fund this service. A friend of mine, Hal Cauthen, in the Washington Apple Pi computer club, decided not to just to acquiesce to this odd form of exclusion; he sent me an email last Wednesday night asking me to compose a song that would help this library system better understand the way their actions are discriminatory. Hal is one of the most decent and generous persons around. He hardly ever spoils for a fight. When he asked me to compose a song, I knew I had to jump in and help. Hal has gone out of his way to be helpful to me (and others) in the past few years. We worked on a couple different songs ideas together, and came up with this one that best expresses our point of view. Your Audio Book Sounds Silent to Me. (Click here: http://www.his.com/~pshapiro/song.html) Okay, now the song is composed and placed on the web, what next? We would like the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and Library officials to hear from you. We would like you to join us in askng for their support in finding a solution that does not discriminate on any basis, certainly not on the basis of the computer one chooses to use. Contact information for the Supervisor, Gerry Connolly or Representative Sharon Bulova can be found here: http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/government/board/. Contact information for the Director, Fairfax County Public Library, Edwin S. Clay III, can be found at the bottom of the page here: http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/library/ Ask them to work with Hal and I to find a solutions that is inclusive, not exclusive.
