Bamboo Bicycle Frame

bamboo1.jpgIs there anything bamboo can't do? Here's a how to on making a bike frame out of bamboo. "I saw many amazing constructions made of bamboo and I always wondered, why such light, strong, stiff and elastic material is not widespread used for building of bicycle frames. Since I finished my carbon frame, I was thinking about using bamboo for my second frame". Link via BoingBoing.

  • SERIOUS MAKE FEATURE ARTICLE CONTENDER: I saw this on BB and it set my heart aflutter. I wish there were a kit with all the parts (except the bamboo maybe) that one could buy ( I guess I could make my own jig but it would be nice to get all the joints/dropouts etc in one package) this bike is in-f-ing-credible. I'm a bit worried about safety I guess, but it's such an elegant machine. I'm afraid the know-how is a little higher than my experience. But WOW.

  • You can actually get various carbon components from Deda. They sell an entire kit called the Deda Carbon System. I am not sure if you could only get the lugs, dropouts and drop outs.
You would still have to make your own jig though. It is important that everything is in precise alignment or else you will have a very interesting ride.
